Stay in Your Session

I am putting myself in the shoes of a calypsonian in 2010. They are not really comfortable shoes because they are squeezing me. Sometimes I think it is in punishment for not making the best use of the ten months in the off season. During those ten months I could have been more disciplined about working with my writers and musical arrangers to get my songs in order. Instead I did what I always do and forgot about carnival until May or so.

Wearing my ill fitting shoes, I have to be chasing after my people. They are all so busy because so many others, like me, are competing for some attention. I am not exactly excited about the products I have to offer this year but what can I do at this point? Besides you never know with the Lucian crowd. I have presented them with master pieces that they just do not respond to. At other times, I have come with a song that I just know is nonsense and it takes off like wild fire. Yeah man, I will try my luck with the ones I have and see how it goes. If things really bad, I can always write a song after quarter finals for the semis and beyond.

So first night of tent, I put on my shoes and take off. I am nervous but I will not let anyone see my weakness. I will do what I have always done. Go on stage like I have the best song ever and deliver like the old master I am. But wait..They like it. Yeah! In your face! Watch dem. They dancing and clapping. It's a hit. Yeah man...I in dat. Oh no! How the words going again! I forget! Whatever, I will sing the first verse again. They like it. That is all the matters.

All of a sudden I am off the stage and the shoes don't feel so tight anymore. I feel like I can walk a mile in them. They like it. Yeah man. I can feel it. This year is mine. That song have a nice catchy rhythm. I can do groovy and finals with that. Yeah man! I safe. I in charge. I am already thinking of how I will manage all the appearances I will have to make with my bomb song.

Oh so I thought. Calypso Association is in charge. Not me. Now I have to stay in my session. Is either calypso or groovy. Can't do both with my song. Decisions, decisions. Which one do I have the better chance with? Which one has more money? Can I win either? Can I even place? Dem fellas should have told me long before that they were going to pull this one song one competition stunt. Now, I have to stay in my session...calypso, groovy or power. Question is which one is the session for me! I need to take off these shoes. They killing me.
